How do I know if online learning is right for me?

In determining if online learning is right for you, please consider the following:

  1. All course work is completed online: students must have access to a computer with reliable internet and must be comfortable working with technology. NOTE: in addition to online theory courses, some programs may require in person work integrated learning experiences such as placement or field projects.
  2. Online learning is self-directed: students are expected to follow a calendar to work through course materials, readings and assessments each week. Skills such as time management, organization and independence will be vital to your success.
  3. There are no lectures or mandatory synchronous (live) sessions: students will be expected to read through course materials supplemented with videos, interactive online tools, and textbooks.
  4. Courses are supported by a course facilitator: students work through the course materials independently, with the facilitator providing support through discussion boards, announcements, emails and assessment feedback.
  5. While flexible, online courses will still have set deadlines and expectations: students are able to login and complete course work on their own schedules, there are no pre-determined login times or timetables. Courses are accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. However, there are pre-determined deadlines for all readings, course work and assessments that must be completed on time to be successful.

Some learning styles do not work as well in an online learning environment, and that’s fine! It’s important for you to recognize your strengths and find the delivery method that will not only offer the flexibility you need, but ensure you are setting yourself up for success. If you are hesitant to consider online studies, starting with one course as a part-time student is a great way to determine if online learning is the right choice for you.

What if I live outside the Ottawa area?

Students can complete online programs and courses outside of Ottawa, however there are a few things that are different for non-local students.

  1. If you are an out-of-province or out-of-country student, it is your responsibility to confirm that the Algonquin College credential you need is accepted in your region.
  2. It is possible your course(s) may require an in-person exam. Students within 100 km of the Ottawa area will complete their exams on campus. Students outside of this region will complete their exams at a local postsecondary institution.  It is the student’s responsibility to find and pay for an exam proctor.
  3. Supports needed are offered by phone and email. Students in the Ottawa area may have access to additional supports if visiting the campus in person.

If you are interested in a program that requires field placements, there may be additional implications for scheduling field placements outside of the Ottawa area. Review the field placement FAQs for more details.
